On notion of R: P. Howell, seconded.by..Joseph Leary the petition of the
Valley Electric Company for permit.to hang a neon..sign for San Luis Wallpaper and
Paint Store at 685 Higuera Stre.-t referred.to_the_Commissioner of Public Health and
Safety for investigation and report to the Council.
It was moved by R. P. Howell, seconded by Joseph Leary that the petition
of Stanley Radgus for permit to move an iron and steel Hamburger and Soft Drink Stand
from Pismo Beach and place same on a part of Lot 18, Block 99 (Property of T. A. Greenleaf,
was granted with the provision that the petitioner comply with the provisions of the
Building Code, as advised by the Building Inspector, such as a new steel roof, etc.
Application of Stanley Radgus for license for Mdse. (Confectionery, Lunch,
Soft Drinks, etc.) at Lunch Stand on Marsh Street, referred to the Commissioner of Public
Health and Safety for report to the Council.
On motion of R. P. Howell, seconded by W. H. Brazil, the meeting adjourned
to Monday, May 22nd, 1939 at 7:30 P. M.

The application of Rundle's Inc. for permit to erect a neon sign reading
"O'Reilly Court - New Modern " at O'Reilly Golden Rule Court, 1991 Murray Ave., referred
to the Commissioner of Public Health and Safety for investigation and report, on motion
of R. P. Howell, seconded by Joseph Leary.
The application of Dr. B. F. Loveall by Union Hardware and Plumbing Co.
for permit to install sewer connection for residence on Harris Street between Sandercock
and Branch Streets referred to the Commissioner of Public Works for investigation and

The petitioXi of Ben Cerini for permit to remove three trees from property at
Palm and Santa Rosa Streets which are damaging sidewalk !vas received and on motion of
Joseph Leary, seconded by R. P. Howell, said petition-was-referred to the Commissioner of
Public Works for investigation, and also, with power to act after investigation.
In a communication, R. H. Beecham offered to rent certain street improvement
equipment; on motion duly seconded and carried the matter was referred to the Commissioner
of Public Works.
Communication relative to fire siren received and placed on f$le.
In a communication, Kenneth Beck, City Engineer, tendered his resignation as
Street Superintendent of the City of San Luis Obispo and it was moved by R. P. Howell,
seconded by W. H. Brazil and carried that the resignation be accepted with regret. The
City Clerk was directed to address Mr. Beck stating that the Council desires his services
to continue as Consulting Engineer,
Mr. I. Lester appeared before the Council and requested a permit to use the
streets of the City at 10 o'clock A. M., May 30th, for a parade of all veteran organi-
zations and auxiliaries thereto, in honor of Memorial Day. It was moved by R. P. Howell,
seconded by W. H. Brazil that the request be granted with the understanding that the said
parade be given Police Escort.
Ordinance No. 197 (New Series) - An Ordinance providing for the levy and col-
lection of a tax to pay principal and interest of the City of San Luis Obispo Water Bonds
of 1939, Series "A ", was finally passed on motion of R. P. Howell, seconded by 1.7. H. Braz
by the following vote:

The following applications for permit to lay sidewalk and curbing were granted
on motion of R. P. Howell, seconded by W. H. Brazil with the provision that work be done
under the supervision of the City Engineer:

St. between Osos and Santa Rosa Streets,

Application of Valley Electric Co. for permit to hang a neon sign at the San
Luis Wall Paper and Paint Store, 685 Higuera Street granted, on motion of W. H. Brazil,
seconded by Joseph Leary with the provision that work be done under the supervision of 1
the City Engineer and in accordance with the provisions of Ordinance.
Application of Modern Neon Sigh Co. for permitto hang a neon sign at the
R & R Coffee Shop, 1050 Monterey Street granted, on motion of W. H. Brazil, seconded by
R. P. Howell with the provision that said sign be hung in accordance with provisions of
Ordinance and under the supervision of the City Engineer,
Re: Petition of A. E. Chase for ramping 43 ft of driveway on Islay Street
between Broad and Garden Streets, Commissioner'of Public Works, R. P. Howell, reported
favorably, and on his motion, seconded by W. H. Brazil, the petition was granted with
the provision that work be done under the supervision of the City Engineer.

Hansen, Chief Inspector, Local Public Health.Office approving,installation providing work
is done according to standard specifications was filed. It was moved by R. P. Howell,
seconded by W. H. Brazil that the petition be granted with.the understanding that the work
be done in accordance with standard specifications of the State Board of Health and under
the supervision of the City Engineer.
Petition of A. M.•Pettenger relative to extension of parking zone from
Nipomo Street on Higuera Street to and including 554 Higuera Street was referred to the
Commissioner of Public Health and Safety for further investigation.
Various applications for employment with the City were presented by the

City Clerk and on motion of R. P. Howell, seconded by W.. 1i. Brazil, same were referred
to the Commissioners of the various Departments.
Application received from Leonard Lenger for appointment as City Engineer.
It was moved by R. P. Howell, seconded by W. H. Brazil that Leonard Lenger be appointed
Superintendent of Streets and -Ex- Officio City Engineer. Motion carried by the following
vote:

Re: Appointment Fire Chief: It.was moved -by.W. H. Brazil, seconded by
R. P. Howell that W. L. Payton be appointed "Fire Chief" at a salary of $160.00 per month.
Motion carried by the following vote:
