Division of Highways
Present: Frank Gregory, Henry Case, Ralph Lejonhud, Ken Jones
Frank Gregory, District Engineer, stated that the Division of Highways had made
various studies of Route 227 (Edna Road) and it was their opinion after making
these studies, that this road would not carry the capacity to warrant freeway
' status and it was their opinion that it would be primarily a commuter highway
for people coming to and from the City of San Luis.Obispo. He then presented
an alignment map showing the proposed widening of Route 227.from the, town of
Edna to High Street in San Luis Obispo. He continued that the plans between
these two points were to widen Route 227 and relocate portions which would
include one railroad overcrossing and a re- alignment in the vicinity of the
County Airport. He continued that this was a general overview of the complete
project but they wished to discuss with the City Council the widening of Route
227 (Broad Street) from Orcutt Road to High Street in more detail.
Henry Case explained the proposal for widening of Route 227 (Broad Street)from
Orcutt Road to High Street. He presented a map showing properties affected
by this proposed widening. He stated the street would be 80' wide curb to
curb with four 12' driving lanes, two 8' parking lanes and a 16' turning
pocket lane the length of the project. He continued, showing the widening
detail property by property.
Frank Gregory then stated that they hoped to get this matter before the public
in more detail for public hearing during the month of June. They felt that
after the hearings, it would take two years to get financing and then they
would start work as soon as possible.
The City Council, Planning Commission members and Division of Highways repre-
sentatives then discussed the individual properties on Route 227 and how they
would be affected by the widening.
Mayor Schwartz thanked the representatives of the Division of Highways for
their preview of the study of Route 227 and also .thanked the members of the
Planning Commission for attending and taking part in the discussion.
Mayor Schwartz then adjourned the special meeting.
