HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-05-2018 HRC Minutes Minutes Human Relations Commission Wednesday, September 5, 2018 Regular Meeting of the Human Relations Commission CALL TO ORDER A Regular Meeting of the San Luis Obispo Human Relations Commission was called to order on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Hearing Room, located at 990 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, California, by Chair Welts. OATH OF OFFICE City Clerk Teresa Purrington administered the oath of office to newly appointed Commissioner William “Bill” Crewe. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners Robert Clayton, Bill Crewe, Barrie DuBois, Vice-Chair Carol Sexton, and Chair Nancy Welts Absent: Commissioners Michael Hopkins and Emily Rosten Staff: Cara Vereschagin, Assistant Planner; Teresa Purrington, City Clerk PUBLIC COMMENT None CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES 1. ACTION: MOTION BY COMMISSIONER DUBOIS, SECOND BY COMMISSIONER CREWE CARRIED 5-0-2 to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Human Relations Commission of August 1, 2018 with the correction identified in agenda correspondence by Assistant Planner Vereschagin on September 5, 2018. BUSINESS ITEMS 2. Assign 2018-19 Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Commissioner Liaisons City of San Luis Obispo, Title, Subtitle Minutes Human Relations Commission Meeting of September 5, 2018 Page 2 Assistant Planner Vereschagin gave an overview of the liaison process for the newly awarded GIA program grantees. Commissioners discussed organizations that they were interested in liaising with and all Commissioners agreed on new liaison assignments. COMMISSIONER & STAFF COMMUNICATIONS 3. Diversity Effort Chair Welts began the discussion amongst the Commission. She briefed the HRC members about a meeting held with City staff, the HRC Subcommittee, City Council liaisons, and members of the SLO Police and Community Together (PACT) team; as well as information from a PACT meeting that was attended by the Subcommittee and City staff. The HRC discussed the information and brainstormed some ideas for next steps. Commissioner Clayton communicated his eagerness to move forward with a work effort. The HRC directed staff to continue working through a potential forum for a community discussion. 4. Community Needs Workshop Details Assistant Planner Vereschagin explained the reasoning and logistics for the upcoming Community Needs Workshop to take place at the next Regular Meeting of the HRC. She collected feedback on a visual flyer to publicize the Workshop. Commissioners also discussed promoting the Workshop with the Police and Community Together (PACT) team, County officials, and previous GIA applicants. Additional Communications Chair Nancy Welts inquired about the Regional Code of Civility adopted by the surrounding jurisdictions and requested direction for the HRC to adopt it as well. She also communicated that September 25th is National Voter Registration Day; thus, it is a great opportunity for people to either register to vote and/or update their voter information. Commissioner Crewe informed the HRC that Shower the People SLO has almost collected enough money to purchase a mobile shower trailer to begin operations in an effort to combat homelessness. Commissioner Clayton informed the Commission that GALA publicized a new mental health grant. Assistant Planner Vereschagin provided the Commission with an updated timeline for the 2019-20 Grants-in-Aid (GIA) and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dates.
