HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/3/2019 Item A, Closed Session, Ayral Wilbanks, Megan From:Odile Ayral <oayral@calpoly.edu> Sent:Friday, To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Public Comment: Transition from at-large to district elections Mayor Harmon and Council Members, I hope you will seriously consider a transition from at-large to district elections in San Luis Obispo as soon as possible, not because you may face an expensive lawsuit, but because it is the right thing to do. Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles are already transitioning, and more cities are sure to follow. We all know that our four Council Members live south of downtown and have been living there for quite some time. Mayor Harmon used to live downtown as well, and has only recently moved to the Laguna Lake area. The entire north part of town, east and west, is not represented--and it shows because the residents of the north part have been systematically ignored every time they have tried to fight for their neighborhoods. There are three visible types of residents in the north part of town: 1. Long time Residents who are often aged. 2. College Students and University Staff. 3. Residents of Mexican ancestry due to the presence of Pacheco School. None of these are represented in our present Council, therefore the move to district elections is necessary, and I hope we will have the pleasure to see our Progressive Council support it. Sincerely, Odile Ayral 1
