Hi there, my name is Justin Bradshaw and I’m a homeowner here in SLO. I’m writing to express my
thoughts on your changes to the state laws about ADUs.
- I don’t think you should reduce the square footage OR the bedroom requirements but if you’re going
to do that, just do one of them, not both… to allow homeowners some flexibility. I understand not
wanting to see a 1200sq/ft apartment building-like thing built with 5 bedrooms... so the bedroom
restriction (maybe 3, not 2?) makes more sense than the square footage one. Square footage of ADUs
should be based on the size of the lot, not the arbitrary numbers your committee has come up with.
- Most importantly, DO NOT allow planners to require ADUs over 750sq/ft to have a new utility
connection. This will just defeat the purpose of these units and help make housing prices higher and
higher. If there is a specific deficiency with the electric panel or sewer lateral, they should have to
increase it to accommodate the new unit, but that’s all.
thank you for considering my comments,
Justin Bradshaw
