STATEMENT TO SAN LUIS OBISPO
CITY COUNCIL COMPENSATION COMMITTEE
AT ITS JANUARY 7, 2020. MEETING
Members of the Council Compensation Committee:
My name is Nik Schiff mann, and I am a representative of the California
Voting Rights Project. We primarily support single -member district elections, but
we also support reasonable proposals to increase elected official compensation.
It takes a great deal of time and effort to serve as an effective member of
an elected body. Increasing compensation for City Council members will enable
more people to run for and serve on the City Council. Increasing compensation
for the City Council has been effective elsewhere in increasing the proportion of
younger people, lower socioeconomic people, and members of protected classes
on city councils. Other cities of comparable size to San Luis Obispo have raised
Council compensation with positive results.
Thank you for your consideration and service.
