Subject:Parking on Dana Street
Please read aloud at the upcoming meeting as my wife nor I can attend:
January 14, 2020
TO: Honorable Mayor Harmon and Council Members Christianson, Gomez, Pease,
Rivoire:
I, Rhonda Collins, and my husband, Christopher Fitzpatrick, are residents of Dana
Street near downtown San Luis Obispo. We are two of the many on Dana who believe
our current parking issues, coupled with the development of the Downtown Terrace,
warrant the expedited permit-parking program. We have been in support of Ursula
Bishops efforts for two years now, in attempt to settle the issue.
We understand that City staff agreed our situation warranted the change, and we hope
that the Council agrees too, and works to expedite the request.
Long term parking (and CAMPING) on Dana Street is hazardous to locals, and with
zero parking spaces planned for the entire Downtown Terrace group of residents, the
situation stands to worsen. Currently, we residents struggle to find parking on our own
street, and often times must maneuver around people sleeping in their vehicles on Dana
with caution.
I personally have been cussed out and harassed on three occasions by men sleeping in
make-shift campers or truck beds on the block. This is unacceptable, and my calls to
the police department are met with rolling eyes. No one seems to be able to address
these folks. The past two years I have been compelled to walk the distance from Dana
to my post office box with pepper spray, having had one man put his hands on me.
This is an important step in cleaning up and improving safety on our street.
Our hope is this approval is finalized in the very near future.
Respectfully,
Rhonda Collins
Christopher Fitzpatrick
