Dear City Council Members,
I would like to briefly address your considerations re. a proposal that ... “The City shall accept a ‘Work of Art’ that
commemorates ideas, ideals and concepts – not individual and actual people.”
Recent efforts by government agencies to remove statuary commemorative of individuals notable for their historical
contributions are an attempt to re-write history and wash away implied complicity in human error. These attempts and the
proposed policy rewrite (above) are of themselves a part of our cultural history. Editing it out does not change that history
but adds to it. What is important to commemorate are the progressive changes individuals have contributed to our society.
Few of these individuals are saints but are valued actors of social change. We commemorate their contributions to a free
society not the common errors inherent in a human life. I do not see the value in attempting to re-write a future history in
an effort to sustain a politically correct posture.
Sincerely,
Thomas Wheeler
