Subject:Public art ban
Hello my favorite group of public servants!
I’m writing today in rare opposition to something that comes before you. I prefer to be FOR things than rail against
them... so it is with hesitation that I write you today to say that I don’t think it would be good or smart policy to
implement a blanket ban on depicting public art of any individual.
I’m fine with updating the public art ordinance with language about diversity and inclusivity and even favoring ideals
and abstractions over specific individuals... but I think that banning any likenesses of anyone, ever is too extreme and
honestly, unnecessary. Let’s let this and future councils decide on these things as they come up on a case by case basis...
and avoid the potential legal and free speech issues that an action like this could potentially have on the city.
