Subject: CHC membership
Brian,
Concerning CHC Bylaws consideration:
I plan to serve out my term, which ends in spring 2021, but to not re-apply.
For several months the committee has had six of seven positions filled, adding to the difficulty
of having a quorum when combined with member absences (such as those made necessary by
my commitment to Cal Poly for one quarter each year). I'd hoped to recruit at least one
applicant to potentially fill my spot, but haven't been able to.
During at least one of the several city budget-tightening or process-streamlining efforts in past
decades, I recommended that advisory bodies be reduced to five members. Maybe the time has
come for the CHC to have five members. I'm sure the committee's charge could be adequately
fulfilled with five members, ideally composed of individuals with knowledge of architectural
history, archaeology/prehistory, and the curation and communication of cultural resource
information. Having five members would establish three as a quorum. Review of the CHC's
Bylaws is an opportunity to consider reduced membership, possibly achieved by transition as
current member's terms expire.
Please forward to other committee members or staff, as appropriate.
