Honorable Committee Members,
RE: Project Address: 858 Toro; Case #: HIST-0701-2019; Zone: R-2-H; Eric & Jaqueline Blair, owner/applicant. (Walter
Oetzell)
I am writing in support of adding the 858 Toro Street House to the Master List of Historic Resources.
As an owner and restorer of a Master List House (1123 Pismo, The Nuss House) I appreciate the effort, money and time
that has gone into bringing this home back to it's former glory. This house has always stood out to me as a very unique
building in a sea of more typical Craftsman and bungalow homes. I always saw this as an excellent example of an
Italianate style that is not seen very often in a one story home.
Later I learned of the Eastlake classification and the connection to the Jack House. There is also an example that
appears to me to be Eastlake at Chorro and Buchon St, this is the Fitzgerald House. What makes the Toro St house
stand out in my mind, is that it's a one story example of this style which seem to be rather rare.
It is also very fortunate that the foot print and roof line of the house as viewed from the corner of Mill and Toro has not
changes in over 100 years.
What really stands out to me was the removal of the enclosed front porch. Whoever made that decision did the home
a favor and it's really an improvement on the way the house looks and keeping it's historical significance in tact.
Overall this is a wonderful old home that San Luis Obispo should be proud of and The City would be well served to
protect this asset for future generations to enjoy.
Respectfully Submitted,
