Subject:compensation consideration
Esteemed Council members,
I like to think of myself as an engaged community member.
I attend topic-specific informational events put on by Cuesta, Cal Poly, and our city.
I attend community-building events put on by folks like R.A.C.E. Matters, the Land Conservancy's
opening of the Pismo Preserve, and SLO Farmer's Market
I attend political awareness events like candidate forums put on by the League of Women Voters,
the Chamber of Commerce and U40
I attend fundraising events for everything from Planned Parenthood to the Children's Museum
I attend cultural events from the SLO Symphony to the Central Coast Square Dance Association
To me, participation in a varied civic life makes my life richer, makes me a more informed citizen,
connects me with the people who surround me and helps me to grok the complex tapestry that makes a
happy, healthy community.
And EVERYWHERE I go (ok, maybe not square dancing) I see our hard working City Council. This
participation is what I expect from Council members. I expect them to have a broad understanding and
appreciation for the many threads that weave and pull and sometimes break while making our community.
I want vibrant Council Members, I want Council members with varied income levels and at varying stages
of life: young professionals, parents of young children, single folks, retired folks.
And I firmly believe that adopting the recommendations of the Compensation Committee will foster the
diversity of thought that our city treasures. Based on my personal observations of the rigorous community
engagement schedule our Council members live, not to MENTION a full Council docket and committee
service, our current Council more than deserves a raise, but way more importantly it will be a step
towards attracting the varied pool of candidates we need to walk into our future with the best possible
elected representatives.
Thank you for consideration
