Subject:New Salaries for the Mayor and Council Members
Dear Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
I writing in support of the “Resolution of the City Council of the City of San Luis Obispo, California, setting
new salaries for the Mayor and Council Members.”
Specifically, I agree with the Council Compensation committee’s proposal of a monthly salary of $2,508
for the Mayor and $1,990 for Council Members. I like the approach of prorating the Area Median
Income based on expected hours worked and I believe that this increase will help broaden the pool of
available community members willing to serve on the Council.
I read through the majority of the responses to the “Open City Hall” survey and found the arguments
against the increase to be underwhelming. I do not believe the roles of Mayor and City Council Member
can be fulfilled effectively in a volunteer capacity and I also do not consider $12-17/hour to be fair
compensation for the mammoth task of presiding over a $140M budget and all the pressures that come
with it. The newly suggested salaries are an improvement, albeit slightly below the average for the 9
cities included in the 2019 compensation survey shown in the Feb 4th 2020 agenda packet.
Thank you for all the hard work you are doing to serve our community.
Best Regards,
Travis Higgins
San Luis Obispo, CA
