Subject:Council Compensation
Hello,
I’m writing today to express my support for the proposed change in council compensation.
I know several of the members of the committee who worked hard to propose this increase in
compensation. I know they did their work diligently and without bias and respect their conclusions.
I know that the pool of potential candidates for future councils is highly restricted when the
compensation is so incredibly low. People like me who have jobs and families are highly UNlikely to be
able to serve their community when they have to spend vast quantities of time doing the city’s work and
receive a pittance in return.
In short, with the current pay structure, you’re not getting the best and brightest.
I know that city employees should NOT be paid top level salaries either, but the modest increases
suggested by the committee seem quite conservative and fair. To increase the salaries of all council
members combined by ~$47,000 isn’t a big hit to the city’s budget and stands to make a big difference
in who might be able to run in the future.
After all, how can it be a bad thing to increase the potential pool of people who are wiling and able to
serve the city?
I know, of course that this pay raise should happen AFTER your terms expire. You shouldn’t be voting on
your own salary increase and with this provision any increase removes the critiques that you’re just
trying to line your own pockets.
