Subject:I support a salary increase for all elected city council members
Dear City Council,
I support a salary increase as recommended by the Compensation Committee who
reviewed this issue for San Luis Obispo.
I believe this will open up the community “pool” to those who are interested in
serving on city council, but feel they cannot afford to serve, based on their need to
work full-time in the “private sector”. There are enumerable city council
responsibilities and meetings; the work is intense and these are not actually part-
time positions.
Most electeds have jobs, other than city council. This salary increase makes me think
perhaps this will allow city council members to devote more time to the numerous
meetings, committees, constant learning and research, advocacy and far-reaching
decisions they make without sacrificing their financial health. They may even be able
to step away from their previous positions to be able to devote the time required.
In addition, I do not think retired, wealthy residents should be the majority
representing San Luis Obispo residents on city council.
