Being new to SLO city and a resident of SLO county for decades this is an issue I find important and relevant as many members of the community are dissuaded from seeking public office due to financial constraints. It is evident that these positions hold a significant and time intensive position in the lives of those who choose to serve. I would hope that members of the city council and mayoral office would be compensated at a level that would allow individuals who may not otherwise have the financial means to dedicate time to service an opportunity. Raising compensation will level the ground for many who would not otherwise be able to, or consider serving because of the financial constraints upon them. This will allow more equal opportunity for representation from members of our community who may not otherwise consider service due to full-time work commitments. Please consider the proposals before you seriously as they have the potential to shape government in service to the larger needs of the community and ensure more equal representation amongst city council and mayoral candidates in the future.
