Subject:Regarding Council Compensation
Dear Council Members,
I am writing today in support of the Council Compensation Committee’s
recommendations for increases in Mayoral and Council compensation. I see the role
of City Council and the Mayor in this day and age as that of the very best health care
provider. Like our overburdened medical providers, we ask members of Council to
keep a finger on the pulse of the city, to alleviate problems, and to ensure a bright
and full future. This constant vigilance and commitment to the health and wellbeing
of our city is, in my opinion, beyond a full time job.
Our council, and I hope future councils, are guided by a passion to serve. They are
no doubt dedicated beyond the callings of a job or profession. I do not believe there
is an appropriate amount that would be commensurate with the type of people we
wish to have guiding us. We ask of them for their whole hearts, minds and time, as
such, the raises proposed are meager when compared to the task at hand.
In addition, increasing wages ensures that Council Members and the Mayor are
servants of the City and its people, and not special interests. While I cannot imagine
that anyone would see the recommended compensation as enough to seek,
campaign for, and maintain the job, I do believe that it will help alleviate financial
concerns which may burden future candidates. This further ensures that future
Councils are diverse with regards to age and socioeconomic standing.
Best Regards,
Ryan Lawrence
