I appreciate the public perception issues that pay increases for elected officials can have, especially when the city is facing budget shortfalls and especially in an election year. And I know it can be tough to justify voting for a benefit that will accrue directly to yourselves. But it is only good sense to address these increases incrementally and with regularity. Coming from the cultural nonprofit field, I know only too well the strain that chronically under-funding human resources can put on the very people who nourish an organization. Then, when it finally catches up and needs to be dealt with in order to retain existing staff or hire new people, the sticker shock of making those delayed increases more greatly impair the organization's finances than if small increases had been made all along. Please don't put off making a small needed increase now that will only cause more problems down the road, either for the current council or for those who are elected later! You wouldn't delay making a needed, even if unpopular, increase in compensation for city staff. Don't delay making one for another group of people working hard to ensure our city's success. Sincerely, Eva (Ulz) Fina evaulz@gmail.com 1
