RE: Council Member and Mayor salaries
I am writing this letter in support of increasing the monthly salary for Council Members and the
Mayor in the City of SLO. As Chair of the SLO County Democratic Party, I have direct
knowledge of the amount of time and personal commitment these leaders commit to our
community. Their role is far more than a part-time job, and they should be compensated more
adequately. The current wages are inadequate to meaningfully support these leaders for the
work that they do. The proposed raise is nowhere near paying them for the actual time and
resources they put into their jobs, but it is a start.
If we hope to see a more representative council, we need to create a space where regular folks
can run for office. Improving the compensation for these jobs will create more access for a more
diverse group of people to contribute their skills and perspectives. If only people of means serve
in our government, our government cannot serve the people.
