Hello Council Members,
I am writing to express my support for agenda items 8 and 9.
In regards to item 8, I know that you are all aware of the housing challenges facing our state and our
city. I only want to add that while ADU’s will not solve all of our problems they do remove some of the
barriers to home ownership by enabling the rental income to offset purchasing costs. While you are
weighing all the factors involved in this zoning change I urge you to consider first time homebuyers and
remove as many obstacles from them as possible.
In regards to item 9, I support the proposed increase and believe that it could have been higher. While I
am sure that none of you chose to serve because of the compensation there are many who are deterred
from participating because of the current structure. You will doubtless get opposition to this as it cannot
be easy to weigh the costs associated with this decision. However, I believe that salaries have fallen too
far behind cost of living increases to not take drastic action and the proposed increased are the
minimum that should be considered. When you compare council compensation increases over the last
ten years to the rate that average housing costs have increased in the same period the percentages are
not even close. This increase is not just necessary right now but important catch up for future growth.
