Subject:Mission Plaza Proposals
Honorable Mayoress and Members of the City Council"
You will be reflecting and voting upon changes to the jewel in the crown of San Luis Obispo, the Mission
Plaza. The ARC and CHC have already submitted their recommendations to the Council, as well as Save
Our Downtown.
Please respect the recommendations that address the architectural details of the bathroom
replacement and cafe to be in harmony with the existing style and colors of the Mission. Further, please
deny mobile vendors being part of the scheme. Bear in mind the evolution of the Plaza as we cherish it
today.
Too many great cathedral cities have permitted the encroachment of commercial vendors in their
immediate environs. If one looks at the green campuses that surround the Gothic cathedrals in England,
as opposed to the commercial chaos that surrounds some of the Continental cathedrals, one
appreciates the aesthetic preservation of the former.
Our very own Mission churches up and down California have their courtyards, fountains, gardens, bell
towers, and represent an historic style and continuity that deserve our respectful preservation without
encroachment.
San Luis Obispo Mission is the pro-cathedra church of the Monterey Roman Catholic diocese. It
furthermore serves the SLO secular community in accommodating some of the most beautiful concerts.
As your very meeting takes place on February 18th., the Cathedral choir of Peterborough, UK, will be
giving a performance of their beautiful music.
There are already too many occasions when the service or event within the Church has to compete with
secular noise emanating from just beyond its perimeter. Please remember that the Mission is a sacred
place, not a mere tourist attraction, worthy of our highest consideration in whatever changes we make
to its site.
Respectfully submitted,
