We are pleased to see the commission continue discussion of joint usage of the courts at French Park.
The SLO Pickleball Club is very pleased with the new courts and the pickle ball striping on the tennis
courts. The city has done well in providing such beautiful recreational facilities for SLO residents. They
are already heavily used by local and visiting pickle ball players. Much appreciation is due the PRC for
their role in making these courts available to so many.
It appears item #4 on the March 4 agenda proposes to restrict pickleball usage of the lower courts. This
seems irrational, as they are heavily used for pickleball whenever available. Reserving them for tennis
only on additional days seems counterproductive, if the city’s goal is to maximize utilization of
recreational facilities. Fridays, especially, sees heavy pickleball use of the lower courts. After striping
the courts, it seems unwise to restrict usage when they sit unused much of the time. What is the
rational?
The SLO Pickleball Club has worked diligently with city staff to help realize the current facilities and
recreational opportunities. We are appreciative, but do not want to see our usage now restricted by
some unsupportable rational.
Respectfully,
Barry Frantz, SLO
