Dear Mr. Mayor :
Rs a general rule, I am not a letter writer to government officials, bu t
the latest rumors regarding $ 1000 .80 fines, etc . for homeowners i n
Old Town are very upsetting to this old lady ., I can hardly believe tha t
our beloved city would do this to the mostly old people who line here .
On our block of four houses, three are occupied by retirees . We all try
to do our best to keep up our properties, but huge fines woul d
certainly preclude our doing anything . It all seems so draconian t o
me .
When one is a long time widow on a fixed income, it is alway s
daunting to keep up with repairs . Many things happen to 100 year ol d
houses and gardens during the year ; and one must prioritize . M y
biggest problems , for example are aging water pipes and eery ol d
trees . It is very expensive to have a tree cut down and the same fo r
repairing leaks . My french doors need to be repainted , and I will ge t
to it, hopefully before the rains come but the tree leaning on th e
wires is the first priority this fall .
I am giving you my personal problems and opinions so you can se e
that not everyone is in favor of this ; and for , what I think, are goo d
reasons . Surely there must be a kinder, gentler way to protect ou r
heritage without sacrificing senior citizens for senior properties .
Maybe there is a compromise somewhere . Sorry I cannot come to th e
council meetings to voice my concerns, but I not longer drive at night .
