Over 24,000 votes were cast for the six city council candidates and now we are going to have four cit y council votes determine the outcome of the next city councilperson . This seems to be a bead y acceptable means of electing a councilperson . Knowing that a vacant seat could arise was a definite possibility, should Jan become Mayor, I feel there should have been an amendment in place prior t o the election stating that the next highest vote gatherer would automatically be awarded the seat .I hope this council will correct this for the future . I feel there are two indelible qualifications needed for candidates running for city council, one of the m is knocking on neighborhood doors and meeting the people of San Luis Obispo and the other is to b e heard as part of candidate debates . I have a concern with two of the three candidates running in that they have not presented themselve s to the public of SLO at their doorsteps and have not been part of candidate debates . I feel this is wha t makes our local governments work . A question I wish you could ask these candidates is, Why didn't they enter the Nov 2 election and ar e instead doing it now? I feel the citizens of SLO deserve an answer to this question . Dan Carpenter stands out in terms of knowledge of our community and a very lon g history of acting for its betterment . We have had conversations on city issues with Dan for nearly forty years . No one possesses a bette r grasp of the issues confronting our community . We got to know Dan much better during his service on the Cultural Heritage Committee . As a founding member of that body, We are always concerned about members really comprehending th e often intricate details of each action item . Dan consistently went the extra distance to understandin g the historicity and community contexts of everything he voted on . Dan would be an ideal colleague and a real asset to your body . We urge you to select him thi s evening .
