Subject:Item 15 - Allocation of undesignated funds
Dear Council,
I am writing to ask that you please allocate funding for quick build projects. Specifically, I would like to see the city add
protected bike lanes and in general pursue a very aggressive timeline to build out a core bicycle network.
I work down on S Higuera and commute by bicycle several times each week. I travel first along the Railroad Safety Trail,
then through the Hawthorn neighborhood before finishing my ride down South Higuera. The difference between my
experience and perceived level of safety between the section of separated bike infrastructure and the class 2 lanes on
Higuera is striking. If my whole commute were on separated facilities, I would ride every day! Instead there are days
when the close calls with cars driving 50 MPH just one to two feet away from me leave me in tears and questioning my
choice to ride.
I am a long-time rider and have commuted in major cities where it feels safer than SLO because of their infrastructure.
Unfortunately SLO just seems to be getting faster and faster. Drivers, especially during rush hours are in such a hurry and
offer distracted, creating dangerous conditions for unprotected people on bikes and walking.
Please choose to use these undesignated funds to grow SLO’s separated bike network so that more people riding, rolling,
and walking will feel safe on our roads.
Thank you,
Melanie Mills
