Chairman Root and Members of the Architectural Review Committee,
I am writing this letter in support of the proposed residence at 1141 Ella Street. In 1988, I built my
house on a very similar flag lot configuration three sites to the west of the property where the
Cops are proposing their residence. During the early stages of design Mr. Esser, the Cop’s design
consultant, contacted me about the challenges of designing on the hillside. We discussed the pros
and cons of the site. These hillside sites propose many challenges and rewards. The Ella Street
neighborhood is a wonderful collection of eclectic structures. You can find just about any style of
architecture here. I think Mr. Esser has done a commendable job of working with the hillside,
the existing vegetation and the neighboring properties.
The configuration of the lot, along with the hillside, predicates a wider and shallower structure.
Although the proposed residence will have a limited view from the street Mr. Esser has worked
with the façade to break up the mass and proposes a color scheme that works well with the
natural hillside. From what I have reviewed from the previous staff report, Mr. Esser is meeting all
the required design and planning guidelines.
I look forward to seeing this vacant lot finally being built on and feel this carefully designed new
residence will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Respectfully submitted,
Barry L. Williams, Architect
