RE: Public Comment - 520 Perkins Lane Removal of Eucalyptus
Good afternoon.
I am writing in favor of the expeditious removal of the eucalyptus tree located on the property of 520
Perkins as a matter of precautionary safety where injury to myself and damage of my property are
concerned. This precautionary concern is the result of a previous eucalyptus failure on 02/01/20
occurring in the same general location and the location’s proximity to my dwelling.
As it is generally accepted in the state of California, eucalyptus trees are dangerous in some
conditions. For example in exposed locations, where eucalyptus trees are subjected to strong winds, a
shallow root system presents a hazard to people, homes and other structures. If the root system is not
well established, winds can cause the tree to sway, which loosens the soil around the root collar. This
causes the shallow roots to tear and the tree may fall over. This appears to be the cause of the most
recent eucalyptus failure 02/01/20 at 520 Perkins Lane. Our conditions on the South Hills can easily be
described as frequently breezy with gusts not at all uncommon in the winter and spring months.
Members of the committee, eucalyptus trees located near dwellings and other structures are an
inappropriate and known hazardous species in this environment. Please grant Kevin Betz’s petition to
remove the eucalyptus tree in question as a matter of safety to structure and being.
Sincerely,
Kirk M. Kozak
