The Railroad Safety Trail project is an important safety project to connect Cal Poly with Downtown
SLO with an off-street trail and bridge for bicycles and pedestrians. Additionally, the project will
reduce the trespassing along UPRR tracks and reduce the homeless camping along the tracks in the
section by increasing the fencing access controls for this area.
The tree removal plan provided is an estimate of the extent of trees to be removed to construct the
project. Only trees that are in direct conflict with the pathway alignment will be removed. First
preference will be to trim and prune and preserve trees to the extent possible.
Upon completion of the project, the City has a separate project to reconstruct additional fencing,
lighting and cameras for the CHP building. As part of this project, the City will be able to replant to
the site at a ratio of 1:1 for all trees removed.
Additionally, the City will be replanting the area between Highway 101 and California Blvd. to the
greatest extent possible. This area is currently selected for replanting as part of the Caltrans project
approval, with room for additional plantings after project completion.
