HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/2/2020 Item 12, Bertrando Wilbanks, Megan From:Betsy Bertrando < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:545 Higuera/486 Marsh Streets June 1, 2020 To: Mayor and Council, City of San Luis Obispo Re: 545 Higuera/486 Marsh Streets Development There is a continuing destruction of the historic portions of San Luis Obispo. What makes us unique as a community is our long history. In our rush for solvency and housing we have lost our vision. Along with the blocks immediately adjacent to the mission and dating before 1850, the lower Higuera/Marsh Streets area is the oldest section in San Luis Obispo and has never been recognized as such. This is yet another site where there will likely be mission period archaeological issues that will need to be addressed. Successful world cities have kept their historic core and they have become better economic drivers in the long term. To improve the historic character of the Marsh/Higuera Streets southern gateway to San Luis Obispo will go far into bringing visitors to our town. Many of us know the State and Federal Guidelines regarding development within historic areas. The proposed project abandons them, as well as the City of San Luis Obispo’s Guidelines. I strongly urge you to adopt Resolution PH 12 and deny the appeal of the Planning Commission’s approval of ARCH-0017-2019 for reasons noted above, in particular, the Categorical Exemption from Environmental Review. Respectfully, Betsy Bertrando 267 East Foothill Boulevard San Luis Obispo 1
