Council:
We have been frequent visitors to San Luis Obispo to see family and to visit our son
when he was attending Cal Poly. Seeing the historic homes in many of the
neighborhoods and how they have been preserved and well kept, was always a welcome
sight. The downtown with its one-story buildings, mom and pop businesses, no malls
made strolling the town pleasant and relaxing. It was extremely depressing to see the
proposed luxury apartment and hotel complex's extreme size in a neighborhood block
that should be preserved for historic homes.
We have read the Community Design Guidelines paragraph in the letter from James
Papp. It is clear to us that several written guidelines have been ignored completely for the
proposed complex. The size is totally out of proportion both in height, scale, lot
coverage, and set backs. This building does not represent San Luis Obispo's charm,
consideration of the existing neighbors, and the established neighborhood. It has been
pointed out that the established guidelines should be followed unless there are "specific
extenuating circumstances" and apparently none have been offered.
We have been lucky to live in an area where there is a strong Design Review Board and
they follow codes and strive to protect the city's aesthetic qualities. This proposed
complex does not aesthetically fit in, improve, or enhance the neighborhood. We strongly
urge the Council to reject this project.
Thank you for your consideration of this letter.
