HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/2/2020 Item Public Comment, GarrettI saw the mayor talking on the news on Tuesday (June 2) about going to the City Council for authorization to never use tear gas again. That is a FOOL HARDY thing to ask. If this city
ever had a real riot what would you expect the police to use to disperse the crowd and take the anger out of them; gentle talk, water cannons, and bubble gum? A crowd out of control
will not respond to anything “gentle”.
You SHOULD NOT take this option off the table without input from the police and experts. First off, you are not the expert, and second just because the local residents or some community
leaders (ex. Some minister who says they NEVER want to see tear gas used again. Too bad, not their decision) are upset is no reason to surrender to their demands. YOU and the mayor
need to decide how this city will be managed.
Last, I am former military and experienced full tear gas as part of my basic training. Was it pleasant? No, it was not intended to be. Was I injured? No, tear gas does not cause injury
or pain, only tears, coughing, and disorientation. Do I have any effects now? No, tear gas does not cause any long term effects. It is the best thing to use to disperse unruly crowds.
Do not do something rash that you will regret. Get input from those who are experienced, and make an informed decision.
