After seeing the police use tear gas on protesters last night, I felt disgusted and ashamed to live in what would otherwise be the happiest city in America. I am calling on you to reject the proposed 2020 budget, particularly due to the 36.3 million dollars allocated toward the police. Instead of funding a police department which uses chemical weapons on its own residents, I am calling on you to reallocate half of that funding (18 million dollars) and use it toward public housing and other programs such as mental health services that would benefit marginalized communities, particularly the homeless. This may seem excessive, but we have seen that criminalizing homelessness and inequality is not the solution to those issues. Several peer-reviewed sociological and criminology journals have concluded a strong positive correlation between social inequality in crime - that is, the more social inequality, the more crime. I am also calling on you to entirely defund the purchase of any more chemical weapons by the police department, that is, tear gas and pepper spray. The Geneva Convention prohibits the use of chemical weapons, even on enemy combatants. If it is internationally recognized as a war crime, why would we permit our officers to use them on our own residents? It is especially heinous that this was used in the middle of a pandemic which affects the respiratory system. Rather than spending taxpayer money on chemical weapons, I propose that the money be used on training on de-escalation. Thank you and have a good day. Google Docs: Create and edit documents online.
