Subject:REALLOCATION OF POLICE DEPARTMENT FUNDING
Dear City Council,
My name is Jack Shaw and I am a resident of San Luis Obispo and a Jewish student at Cal Poly.
In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and so many unnamed others that have
been killed because of our country’s systemically oppressive criminal justice system, we demand action, by you, our San Luis Obispo
city government.
WE DEMAND a commitment by city officials to force the recognition and condemnation of police brutality, the murders of George Floyd
and so many others.
Here’s how you can do it.
WE DEMAND that in today’s review of the 2020-21 budget, you discuss and act on the reallocation of funds currently directed toward
the police department to other programs like health care, education, rehabilitation programs, and alternative forms of policing, such as
community policing, community development, or even a specific diversity, equity, and inclusion line item.
We believe this is a small request to begin to address the massive inequities and systems of oppression that have been perpetuated by
governmental inaction. Though this will not fix the problem, it will move our city in a positive direction and demonstrate a tangible
commitment to addressing systemic racism.
We are just students. All we can do is walk and talk and scream until our voices are heard. You are those who can hear us. Please hear
us. You must hear us.
Thank you for all you do for the City of San Luis Obispo and for your consideration.
Please act now,
Jack Shaw
