Bodinger <jbodinge@calpoly.edu> Sent:Wednesday, June 3, 2020 8:55 AM To:E-mail Council Website Dear City Council, My name is Jacob Bodinger and I am a resident of San Luis Obispo and a current student at Cal Poly. As you know, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many, many others have been killed because of our country’s systematically racist criminal justice system. In light of these events, I ask that in today’s review of the 2020-21 budget you reallocate some of the funds currently directed to the police department in favor of other programs and alternative forms of policing and law enforcement. These alternative forms could include community policing, community development, or even a specific diversity, equity, and inclusion line item. I believe this is a small request to begin to address the massive inequalities and systems of oppression that have been perpetuated by government inaction. Though this will not fix the problem, it will move our city in a positive initial direction and demonstrate a tangible commitment to addressing systematic racism while showing an intent to continue to explore solutions to this problem. While recent events may not have directly effected the city of San Luis Obispo in a significant manner, I believe that as with any other city in the United States, it is only a matter of time before we experience a similar tragic death in our locality. Real and meaningful change to the way the United States views its police force is an imperative; I would really like to see San Luis Obispo be at the forefront of that change. Thank you for all that you do and for your consideration. Sincerely, Jacob Bodinger 1
