If the council deems it helpful to fund anti-racist programs, then let’s do more. According to my research, Chief Cantrell utilized a prior, ongoing training program similar to 8 Can’t Wait Program. I believe her officers proceeded with extreme caution and awareness of everyone’s right to protest but when her officers were in physical danger of violent assault, proper responses occurred after all other steps were used to no avail. However, in your statement to the Tribune, “With meaningful efforts, we can create a city in which tear gas, foam bullets and pepper balls will never be used when people are peacefully demonstrating.” What comes under the definition of “peaceful” when Chief Cantrell reported her officers were being pelted with projectiles. And organizers were proceeding to RE-enter the freeway? Is it OK and peaceful to assault law enforcement? Or is tear gas use allowable as the last resort when property (private cars on the freeway)or businesses are in danger of being damaged. Are you proposing tear gas never be used? I will attend the city council meeting if it is conducted in an open manner. Otherwise please use this email as my statement to the council. Do not ban use of tear gas as last resort to ensure public safety for the rest of us who drive through or reside in San Luis Obispo. Mary Lou Johnson San Luis Obispo Sent from my iPad
