Subject: Public Records Act Request
Dear Mr. Johnson,
Ever since George Floyd lost his life at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, cities throughout our
nation have witnessed large protests often accompanied by vandalism and looting. While the protests in
San Luis Obispo have generally been more peaceful, I was pleased to hear when the police declared one
of those gatherings unlawful.
Now we are hearing a number of city governments calling for underfunding police departments. That is
exactly the wrong way to go in the face of this crisis. Nonetheless, I am concerned about the Mayor’s
comments regarding our Police Department.
As a lifelong resident of SLO and a supporter of the Police department, I am concerned about the costs
the city is incurring in dealing with these protests and that is the subject of my Rick Public Records Act.
My request is for documentation of the number of hours the police and city staff have had to spend in
response to these protests and specifically the amount of overtime hours and the actual costs incurred
by the city to deal with these protests.
I am aware that the city has 10 working days to respond to this request and I look forward to receiving
the information I am asking for within that timeframe.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Mechell Vieira
