Until California has a smaller percentage of natural gas being used to generate electricity, there are many cases when electrical appliances can actually use MORE GAS than gas appliances. Our efforts would be much better served advocating for clean electricity generation sources, the most significant of which is nuclear energy. Did you know that Community Choice Energy programs do not actually deliver 100% clean energy? The previous president of the CPUC, Michael Picker, confirmed for me in an email that CCAs have a large portion of natural gas in their portfolio and can claim no emissions simply by buying paper carbon credits. I am deeply disturbed to learn this, as I know that many people are not aware of this and think that simply by joining CCAs that we are headed in the right direction. All these issues are related and deeply complicated, and I believe that the city should not make encroaching decisions for homes and businesses that may end up causing unintended (and negative) consequences. Why not instead mandate that electrical infrastructure is installed and properly available to pick up the load when it makes sense? Homes should have ability to charge electric cars and outlets available for electrical appliances, in addition to natural gas. I don’t believe we can force the clean energy transition by taking away options. We need the clean ones first. Please feel free to contact me by cell or email with any responses or concerns.
