Subject:I want new buildings to be all electric!
To the SLO City Council:
I support the Clean Energy Choice Program for New Buildings and strongly encourage you to vote yes to put this
program into place.
I am an architect and professor of architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I have been working in the area of
sustainable design for my entire career, including my participation in two U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon
projects with Cal Poly (2005 and 2015). This competition was overtly designed to target a deeper penetration of the
photovoltaic technology into the U.S. market. The market has moved significantly since the inception of that
competition (not due to the competition, of course, but I believe it contributed). Students engaged in these projects
learned firsthand about the urgency of taking action. For these young people and for ourselves, let's demonstrate a
sense of leadership.
This is essential at this time. If we are thinking about responding to those in the "here and now," we really need to be
thinking about our children and the future. In our response to the existential threat of climate change, we need to be
making changes in the spheres of our own control......and this is one of them.
I urge you to support the clean energy choice program.
Thank you for your work.
