Dear Honorable Council Members,
This email intends to request your support for items 11 (electrification) and 13 (VMT) on the June 16 agenda.
Item 11 -- Building Electrification
The city has a choice to follow the dinosaurs to extinction via fossil fuels destined to destroy the biosphere or move to the
future with clean, safe (non-nuclear) and renewable energy choices including efficiency, solar, wind, and storage. Please
don't let the fearful arguments of the gas industry and their stooges sway you. They need to get with the program and stop
polluting.
Having electrified my home in SLO three years ago, I can sleep easier knowing my family doesn't have to fear internal
gas leaks, gas fires, or gas explosions, since no more natural gas flows into our house. I do have to worry about my
neighbors' houses and the gas lines in our street.
If anything, I would like the proposal to go farther and move faster. At this SLOw pace, local businesses may feel less
urgency to expand electric knowledge and infrastructure in a way that could help them to become industry leaders rather
than followers. We have too few local contractors who install solar water heaters and highly efficient and quiet residential
heat pumps. This policy should help encourage the latter, but may do less to encourage the former.
Item 13 -- VMT
It makes too much sense to replace level of service with vehicle miles traveled. This is a no brainer for the reasons listed
in your packet, so I would appreciate your support of this change. Again, the listed thresholds probably do less than they
could to reduce car trips and make this a city designed more for people than for cars.
Thank you for your continued diligent service to our community!
Sincerely,
David Braun, SLO resident
