HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/16/2020 Item 11, Aunger From:Brian Aunger < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:REACH VOTE ..... Please vote YES For over a century the City of San Luis Obispo has been making far sighted decisions that have made the City a desirable place to live and establish new businesses. The ongoing operating costs for new owners and tenants of residential and commercial buildings is not necessarily reflected in the square foot sale price of new construction. Without building code incentive there is no reason for developers to make the initial capital investment in energy efficient design or cost savings for the end user. Adoption of the proposed REACH energy standards by the City will establish for those considering locating in the City that their ongoing energy costs will be as low as cutting edge efficiency requirements have established. The City has already taken the far-sighted step to work in collaboration with Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP) to reduce the carbon foot print of living and doing business in the City. The complimentary REACH building standards will leverage the advantages of service by MBCP for all new building stock both economically and in meeting the carbon emission goals of the State of California. The City is more than just host to San Luis Obispo County admirative offices and Cal Poly’s world-renowned schools of Architecture and Engineering. The precedent set by basing governance decisions on sound innovation to meet new challenges in economic and environmental sound energy efficient building design. Adoption of the proposed REACH energy standards will be a good example for both County decision makers and the students who form the foundation of their careers as temporary citizens of San Luis Obispo. As a thirty-year residence of the County and Cal Poly School of Engineering alumni I encourage the City Council to continue the innovative leadership shown in the past; adopt the REACH energy ordnance as proposed. 1
