Subject:SLO City Council Mtg 6.16.20__Agenda Item #11 Clean Energy Choice: SUPPORT
Hello:
I urge the SLO City Council to SUPPORT the Agenda Item #11 for Clean Energy Choice. To highlight just a few key
reasons, the benefits to occupants include:
Much better indoor air quality by taking toxic gas fumes out of the kitchen and replacing it with star-chef-
endorsed induction cooking.
More stable energy costs. Gas prices are volatile, and although low this year, they are highly likely to rapidly rise
in the future. Going all-electric now will stabilize energy costs for decades to come.
With planning, all-electric home are cheaper to build than dual-fuel, expanding the number of people who can
afford homes. Most commercial buildings are very easy to design as all-electric. The proposed ordinance allows
for a dual-fuel option when needed.
Buildings have a 50-80 year life. With the march toward addressing climate change, new buildings which are not
all-electric (or pre-wired) will be obsolete very soon. The expense to retrofit then in the future is a wasted cost
which can easily be avoided by this ordinance.
My energy modeling consulting firm was a pioneer in Zero Energy buildings and we saw multiple occupancy types
achieve successful all-electric and zero-net-energy projects. The “bleeding edge” and “leading edge” of research in
design and technology have already been done. You are being asked to join the “early adopters” and help this critical
decarbonizing effort move into the mainstream.
Although dozens of jurisdictions across California have adopted all-electric reach codes like this one, much work remains
to be done, and your leadership makes a pivotal difference!
Please vote YES Agenda Item #11 for Clean Energy Choice!
