Subject:Public Comment for Agenda Item 11 - Urging Support
Dear City of San Luis Obispo City Council,
We, the SLO Climate Coalition, are writing in full support of the proposed Clean Energy Choice
Program for New Buildings. The SLO Climate Coalition is a local, community-based organization
committed to creating a vibrant, just, and climate-resilient Central Coast. Our mission is to bring
together community expertise, creativity, and resources to champion high impact regional climate
solutions that inspire other communities to do the same.
The Clean Energy Choice Program for New Buildings program encourages builders, developers, and
homeowners of newly constructed buildings within city limits to make a choice to be cleaner, cheaper,
safer, healthier, and more efficient by going all electric. It maintains the choice to install natural gas in
a new office or home in exchange for a small improvement in efficiency of the building. For those who
choose to save money and keep their indoor air clean by building without natural gas, the program
provides a package of financial and educational incentives, as advocated and endorsed by the SLO
Chamber, to help along the way.
With 12 million existing homes in California, utility and gas workers are ensured to have employment
for decades and decades while maintaining existing homes and buildings over the next 30 years.
There is ample time to begin a transition in their industry - and the transition of their younger union
brothers and sisters - to supplying the next generations with clean energy as thousands of new jobs
and positions are needed. We welcome opportunities to work with them on this transition.
The Clean Energy Choice Program for New Buildings program is one step in the right direction and it
must be taken. We have a lot of work to do afterwards and we look forward to this program being
voted into action so we can get to work.
We encourage the City of San Luis Obispo to adopt this resolution and introduce the ordinance
related to this program, and continue to lead on climate change and responsibility to its future
citizens.
Thank you for your consideration,
Quinn Brady and the SLO Climate Coalition
