As past chair of the AIA|LA COTE (Committee on the Environment) and architect I have been passionate and focused on developing sustainable communities. In order to mitigate climate change we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels immediately. In order to sustain our planet we will need to equally sustain the communities we are living in and provide them with a resilient framework to strive in. Thoughtful policy making and equitable transition from gas to clean energy extends to creating high quality jobs and careers. 70% of low -income residents are renters. Building electrification provides low-income communities access to cleaner air and healthier homes. Access to affordable clean energy and energy efficient appliances will lower monthly energy bills. An important factor in households where not every meal may be guaranteed and every penny counts. Environmental and social justice communities need to have equal access to the benefits of clean air and building electrification. Instead of adding one more problem to solve,an equitable transition will position electrification as a solution to multiple household problems. California has taken significant steps to ensure that it reaches equitable outcomes by addressing the communities that have been left behind by its environmental and energy policies. Policies like SB 535 acknowledge that the benefits of the growing clean energy economy must reach those communities, largely low-income communities of color, that have disproportionately suffered the environmental and economic impacts of our long-term reliance on fossil fuels. Now more than ever we have the responsibility to make decisions which will guarantee mitigating climate change, have an impact on our social justice communities and strengthen our society at large.
