HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/16/2020 Item 11--Received after 6PM, Cochran Clerk, Intern From:June Cochran < To:CityClerk Subject:from June Cochran public comment for Item #11 June 16 meeting tonight (Please emphasize the bold words when you read this!) I encourage you to join the 30 other cities that have responsibly adopted building codes that protect our public safety, our health, our planet, and our pocketbook. Here is the truth: 1. This program is NOT banning natural gas! 2. There are NO imposed fees if you use or install natural gas. 3. No one is going to lose her/his job because of this program. Here are more truths: 1. The building sector accounts for 25% of SLO’s overall emissions so we need to lower that impact and this program will decrease the emissions. 2. This program leads to constructing resilient buildings that are built correctly and responsibly the first time and will not have to be retrofitted which will be much more expensive. 3. This program will create buildings that emote cleaner air which leads to fewer health problems. 4. This program will lead to safer new buildings. There will not be gas leaks or breaks that can put a whole community at risk. Example given: San Bruno where 8 people died, 56 people were injured, 35 homes were leveled and many more damaged, and 200 + firefighters had to respond to that devastation. 5. This program leads to buildings that are much more efficient and cost effective. An electric home is less costly to construct and maintain over its lifetime. 6. With the economic recovery from COVID-19, keep in mind that all electric homes are less costly to construct and maintain over their lifetimes. Dramatic emissions, pollution, safety, and cost reduction benefits should convince everyone that this Clean Energy Choice Program for New Buildings must be approved for the benefit of everyone who lives in this community. Thank you, June Cochran 1
