Wilbanks, Megan From:Jean Martin < To:E-mail Council Website Cc:Jean Martin Subject:The consideration of removal of James Papp from the Cultural Heritage Committee July 5, 2020 To the Members of the City Council, I have had the privilege of working with James Papp since he first came to San Luis Obispo in Fall of 2014. He came from the History Center where he had read all my historical articles I had written for the Research Room. He liked my writing and chose my writing about my Grandfather E.D. Bray who was a very well known Architect , contractor, and builder from Santa Maria to Paso Robles. His craftsman style homes are sought after today as offices. I have been with him as he works with all kinds of people for historical organizations and functions. He is always kind and firm. He stands for what is right and does research to the highest level and will spend all night in getting research done. He will get on his bike at any hour to take pictures or make illustrations historically accurate. James has seen the committee become preservation professionals. The problem is not James. but a City Council who wants a strangle hold on all advisory committees because they are are afraid of losing all control. Every advisory committee needs total independence. I am joining my MANY SLO FRIENDS WHO LOVE OUR HOME TOWN to say forcefully this action is only to restrict oversight and community participation. KEEP JAMES PAPP. HE IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. Written by Jean A. Martin, M.A. Born and raised in our SLO. 86 years young. and concerned about our future in our community. July 5, 2020 1
