Subject:7/7/20 City Council Agenda Item 8
Dear City Council:
I am writing to urge you to remove Item #8 from the July 7, 2020, Consent Agenda and schedule this as a regular agenda
item at a future meeting to allow a more
thorough and fair public discussion regarding the removal of James Papp from the Cultural Heritage Committee. This is a
controversial matter and therefore it is inappropriate to have it included in the Consent Agenda.
I am a historic preservation professional and have worked closely with Dr. Papp on numerous projects over the years.
His knowledge, skills, and expertise are urgently needed on the CHC. I therefore request that Dr. Papp be allowed to
continue serving on the Cultural Heritage Committee through to the expiration of his term on April 1, 2023.
Finally, I encourage you to drop the ill-advised notion of reducing the number of members serving on the CHC from 7 to
5. Advisory bodies such as the CHC are one of the few ways that citizens can participate directly in the democratic
governance of our city. Reducing the number of members will limit public participation in governance and is profoundly
anti-democratic.
