HomeMy WebLinkAbout7/7/2020 Item 08, Cross Clerk, Intern From:Brett Cross <brettcross@yahoo.com> Sent:Tuesday, July To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Item #8 SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF REMOVAL OF ADVISORY BODY MEMBER Dear Members of the City Council, I'd like to say I cannot believe that you are considering removing the sitting chair of the Cultural Heritage Committee but I can't say that. Not that long ago the Council removed a member of the Planning Commission. Apparently the common factor is that the advisory members got in the way of developers projects. Developers can by a whiny group. They whine about everything. They'll tell you that they can't do this, they can't do that. You've got to approve the project right now-- or who know's what. They certainly don't want any City committee or commission members making life hard for them. Regardless if those committee members are making sure the development is consistent with City policies or goals. It's their livelihood and doing what it takes to get a project approved is just part of the "game". I won't mention the project, but I had a discussion after a large housing project was approved some time ago with the developer who said to me. You were right on most of your points but you know it's just business. Apparently, Mr. Papp has gotten in their way and I'm just guessing here but a few developers have "bent" the ear of a couple of you. So now you want to get rid of him. Oh, and I've read the "rationalization" for the removal. It's hogwash. The Council has gone along ways down this road. I don't know if you're even able to turn around at this point. I'm wondering in the longer run if you just want to have commission or committee members who are in alignment with your thinking. If so just come out and be honest about it. And I will mention that just because committee members are diverse when it comes to race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation if they all think alike that doesn't lead to the diversity of opinion that can be most important. I'm guessing you've already justified the decision in your mind but you're making a mistake by removing Mr. Papp. Sincerely, Brett Cross San Luis Obispo 1
