Subject:Council meet of July 7, 2020, Agenda item 8, removal of James Papp
Dear Council Members,
I can not fully judge whether the Chair of Cultural Heritage really was "not inclusive"
in his dealings during committee meetings or not.
He certainly was "inclusive" in meetings with me and he opened my eyes about the beauty of our old town
and the historic jewels in it (Higuera - 486 Marsh) including the different subcultures found in there. I thank
Mr. Papp very much for his professional work, which impresses me.
I grew up in Berne, Switzerland whose olde town, was declared a UNESCO worldwide heritage. I started to
appreciate the flavor of older towns, which helped me later as a UN expert in UAE and in Cyprus. I regret the
fact that some members of our Council here do not seem to see or feel the sensitivity of our old town and
want to distroy it with a high massive building which is clearly in contradiction to the 1992 "Conceptual
Physical Plan for the City's Center" (Schwartz). A high density living/hotel is a questionable investment,
especially during a Pandemic.
When it comes to architecture I admire the old town of Santa Barbara and I took many Cal Poly classes
there. We can not fully copy this here, but we could learn from Santa Barbara, even if one SLO council
member said publicly, that she finds downtown Santa Barbara "boring". Let everybody have his taste!
Thank you for your work in planning and inclusivity.
Sincerely
eugene jud
