Dear Planning Committee Members,
I am writing in favor of the Life Plan Community, Villagio, currently undergoing reviews.
As a 40 year resident of San Luis Obispo, I cannot see myself being up-rooted to have to go outside of this
community when I feel like I can no longer live alone in my own home. I am familiar with one of the housing
situations for seniors since I helped my mother decide. She moved to The Villages and although it is a nice facility,
it doesn’t encompass nearly what Villagio will offer to it’s residents. In fact, the closest place with this inclusive
concept is in Santa Barbara. SLO prides itself on being progressive and now is the time to, in that spirit, provide this
“village” environment for those of us who have been the backbone of SLO for our adult working lives. There has
been the cry for affordable housing but no talk of providing for the baby boomers who deserve to also be
considered.
Villagio will provide amenities for socialization and for most needs without leaving the campus. However, maybe
even more importantly, when the time comes for step-down care, a resident will be able to continue to remain
within the village. There will be provisions for assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care, meaning no big
disruption will be necessary. With the oversight of DSS and DHS, I feel certain that it will be regulated and up to the
highest standards.
Please make the way clear for this important addition to our city. I am excited about the concept and feel
reassured, knowing the people who are involved in creating it as well as many friends who have made the
commitment with a deposit, and are also anxious for this to be a reality.
Sincerely,
Karen Wren Mead
