HomeMy WebLinkAbout8/18/2020 Item 16, Grady From:John Grady < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Agenda item # 16 - 1144 Chorro St. Dear City Council: I adamantly oppose the development being pitched to you for 1144 Chorro St., smack in the heart of our Historic Downtown District and immediately adjacent to the Master List Historic Resource Hotel Wineman. To allow a development 75 feet tall in the Downtown Historic District, where a height of 50 feet is the maximum per code, is simply unconscionable. The suggested rationale to grant such a height exception, such as the provision of 13 "affordable" units and the protection of the paseo between Marsh and Higuera are a ruse. A mere 13 units priced to be 'affordable', defined as those earning up to 120% of the median SLO County income, in no way compensates for the eyesore this building will bring to our formerly idyllic downtown and does not warrant being called affordable housing. This term is continually misused by developers. How many of you voting on this issue tonight have given up your automobiles? If you have not, why not? Personally, I ride my bike to work daily and typically drive a car only when needed for an appointment or on weekends to buy groceries. The point is, I still need my car. This begs the question, where will the residents of these 50 units park their vehicles? You are merely creating yet more parking problems in the adjacent neighborhoods, as you have done with former developments you have approved. You are living in la la land to think that all (or even a few) of these residents will not own a vehicle (or two). Please stand up and finally say NO to developers who continue to flaunt our density and height regulations which we've long had - for obvious reasons. Until you do, these projects will continue to be pitched to pad the wallets of big developers while slowly eroding the beauty of our downtown and our quality of life that attracts residents and tourists alike.
